Interview with Ayato Lin

Ayato Lin is a 3D character modeler from Guangzhou, China.
He likes to work with Maya and ZBrush.

When did you start working in the CG industry?

I started CG related work in 2017. It was interesting that I also started learning 3D modeling in 2017. Practice is the best training, from which I learned a lot.

Favorite software packages?

My favorite software is ZBrush and the second favorite is Maya. ZBrush is a great software that gives a lot of room for creativity, Maya is also fantastic because many functions of it are more convenient than ZBrush.Therefore I use these two kinds of software together and I will be very at ease.

What led you into the CGI/2D? Tell us your story.

I have watched Japanese anime since I was young. Of course, Disney’s animation has a great influence on me, especially the Lion King. It’s fantastic. I also like Snow White. So I liked painting when I was young. My ideal was to grow up to be a cartoonist or animator, but finally I became a graphic designer or graphic illustrator. When I hit the wall in work I came across ZBrush by chance with a recommendation of my friend. Since then I have fallen in love with 3D modeling. Therefore I started to learn and started CG work. Regaining the childhood ideal, i am an animated character modeler now.

Where do you go to get inspired? What/Who inspires you?

When I first started modeling, Danny Mac gave me that biggest inspiration, who often shares some knowledge and experience on his channel in Youtube. And it was very useful for me. I want to say thank you to him here.

How does a typical working day look like?

Worked in the company in the morning and afternoon, and started to make my own artwork after playing 2 hours of games in the evening. I wake up at noon on weekends, play games or browse Artstation and Youtube within 3 hours then I start to make my own artwork.

What does your workplace look like?

How do you stay motivated in this industry?

The big reason I stay motivated is Artstation. For me, Artstation is a great platform that many excellent creators are there,like Danny Mac. I also made a lot of friends. Those interesting people are who I want to be, which allows me to stay motivated.

What is your passion beside CGI/2D?

I want to be involved in making animations like Disney and Pixar as well as participate in the production of my favorite games CG, which must be very cool. This is my passion.

How do you keep your portfolio up to date? Any tips?

I want to make my artwork better so that more people see my artworks. So I will keep updating my artworks. Works in different periods will be contrasted, from which You can clearly see your growth and I like this feeling.

What Software do you use to create your artwork?

Most of the time I use ZBrush, or ZBrush and Maya together, and of course Substance Painter.

What Software do you want to learn in future? And why?

I want to learn Blender in the future which has many features that appeal to me. I think it must be a great software where I can do a lot of things. I am very looking forward to it.

Which books would you recommend to the read?

I usually read a lot of album of paintings,I would recommend Japanese artist Katsuya Terada and Korean artist Kim Jung-Gi. They have great ideas and great paintings that I highly recommend.

What music do you listen to while working?

I listen to Rap most of the time when working, like Eminem, NF. But I listen to songs from Chinese rappers more. When I listen to the songs I feel that I am fighting, which can improve my state and concentration. I enjoy this and feel cool.

Any advice for new Artists?

Keep working, learn from your favorite artists, approach him and try to surpass him. Having a grateful heart and persisting in creative work You will get what you want.
