I entered the CG industry in 2010, when I was an animator, and after three years, I turned to be an original painting designer.

When did you start working in the CG industry?

嗯。。我2010年进入的CG行业,那时候是动画师,做了有3年,才转行做原画设计师。

What led you into the CGI/2D? Tell us your story.

以前是觉得做动画很有意思,因为可以赋予角色生命,这个一度让我十分着迷。随着时间的推长,我对那些模型和原画一直都不太满意,总是想让角色变得更好看,但是这个和我的工作内容无关,我也无能为力。最后我忍不住了,我觉得在角色设计的方面能比他们做得更好,我就转行做了角色设计师。才进入的游戏行业,另外还有一个原因,就是中国的动画行业不景气,从业人员收入很低,这个行业在社会上不被重视,虽然现在有所改善,但是对于从业人员来说变化并不大,但是还是有很多热爱动画的人在坚持,我很敬佩他们。

I used to think it was very interesting to do animation, because it can give life to characters, which once fascinated me. As time goes on, I’m not satisfied with the models and the original paintings. I always want to make the characters look better, but this has nothing to do with my work and I can’t do anything about it. Finally, I couldn’t help it. I thought I could do better than them in the aspect of role design, so I turned to role designer. There is another reason for the game industry that just entered. It is because the animation industry in China is in a recession and the employees‘ income is very low. This industry is not valued in the society. Although it has improved now, it has not changed much for the employees, but there are still many people who love animation persistently. I admire them very much.

Where do you go to get inspired? What/Who inspires you?

我的灵感有时候是来源于小说,有时候是电影,还有一些时装秀。在个人作品中,灵感大部分是来源于小说和时装秀,因为小说能提供很大的想象空间,通过作者的描述会激发起自己的想象力,再配合一些时尚的服饰,能设计出比较时尚、前卫的角色。

My inspiration sometimes comes from novels, sometimes movies, and some fashion shows. In personal works, most of the inspiration comes from novels and fashion shows, because novels can provide a lot of imagination space. Through the description of the author, his imagination will be aroused. With some fashionable clothes, he can design more fashionable and avant-garde characters.

How does a typical working day look like?

工作日的话,上午上网大部分会浏览artstation,pinterest,pixiv,从中获取灵感和找参考,当然这根据角色文案来的,中午打游戏或者画一些练习,下午进入设计的工作内容。一天的工作时间有1/2到2/3的时间在取灵感和找参考,尽量保持思维的活跃,剩下的时间才开始工作,这样效率会比较高。

On weekdays, most of you will browse artstation, pinterest and pixiv in the morning to get inspiration and reference. Of course, according to the role copy, you can play games or draw some exercises at noon and enter the design work in the afternoon. One second to two-thirds of the working time of a day is for inspiration and reference. Try to keep thinking active, and only start working in the rest of the day, so the efficiency will be higher.

How do you stay motivated in this industry?

保持动力,这个跟多的是发自内心的喜欢,把自己的梦或者灵感描绘出来是一件很美好的事情。

Keep the motivation, this with more is from the heart like, to describe their dreams or inspiration is a very good thing.

What is your passion beside CGI/2D?

除了画画以外,我还喜欢下围棋、钓鱼、打台球。

Besides painting, I also like playing go, fishing and billiards.

What Software do you use to create your artwork?

大部分时间是在用PS,但是在工作的时候,为了效率会使用3DSMAX,Keyshot。

Most of the time I use PS, but when I work, I use 3dsmax and keyshot for efficiency.

What Software do you want to learn in future? And why?

想学的太多了,AE、UNREAL、Substance Painter以及对于CG设计有帮助的软件,人的欲望是无限的,但是时间是有限的,这个让我很头疼。

I want to learn too much. AE, unreal, substance painter and software that are helpful for CG design, people’s desire is infinite, but time is limited, which makes me headache.

Which books would you recommend to the read?

《The three body problem》哈哈哈,这是一本非常好的科幻小说,最近沉迷科幻的世界。
