Interview with Yuuri

I draw concept art and illustrations for video games, anime, movies, etc.
After retiring in 2018, I am working as a freelance 2D artist.

Yuuri is a Concept Artist and Illustrator from Japan with 2 years of industry experience.
She likes to work with Photoshop

What led you into the CGI / 2D? Tell us your story.

I loved drawing since I was little. I got interested in concept art, because when I played 3DCG video games at the first time, I thought it would be great if I could walk around the world I designed.

Where do you go to get inspired? What / Who inspires you?

I often go on trips, especially overseas. The land and culture I see for the first time give me a lot of inspiration and ideas.

How does a typical working day look like?

I usually draw from noon to midnight. I work with my favorite music, videos and coffee.

What does your workplace look like?

I work from home. I use a wide desk so that I can work comfortably.

How do you stay motivated in this industry?

I keep my motivation by setting a little play and goals. For example, I add a new expression I wanted to try personally. In addition to I keep my motivation by making time to draw what I just want to.

What is your passion beside CGI / 2D?

I like to travel and scuba diving. Recently I’m practicing drone operation.

How do you keep your portfolio up to date? Any tips?

I regularly draw personal art between work. I upload my arts to Twitter and other SNS and try to get many people look at them.

What Software do you use to create your artwork?

Adobe Photoshop

What Software do you want to learn in future? And why?

Blender. I want to test the drawing function in 3D space.

Which books would you recommend to the read?

Anything that interests me.

What music do you listen to while working?

What I like depends on my mood. Besides music, I play anime, drama, and YouTube.

Any advice for new artists?

I think it takes time to acquire both knowledge and drawing skills, there for, everyone who engaged in the art should observe a lot of things and get more ideas. Also, they should replicate and sketch a lot with purpose. I feel that it’s important to build up regular training.
